As AI becomes an integral part of healthcare delivery, the American Medical Association (AMA) has recommended a number of policies aimed at keeping AI focused on enhancing patient care and improving population health.
Last week, the organization issued a press release further outlining its policy recommendations for AI in healthcare, which now include “payment and coverage of all health care AI systems that are conditioned on complying with all appropriate federal and state laws and regulations, including but not limited to those governing patient safety, efficacy, equity, truthful claims, privacy, and security as well as state medical practices and licensure laws,” among other criteria.
AMA’s policy recommendations are reassuring as they hold AI developers accountable for rigorous validation, thereby ensuring the safety, efficacy, and equity of AI systems. Equally important is that AMA highlights autonomous AI systems are distinguished by the responsibility to manage issues of liability.
It is exciting to see that our work aligns with the AMA’s policy recommendations,” said Dr. Michael Abramoff, Founder and Executive Chairman of Digital Diagnostics. “When we developed and validated LumineticsCore™ (formerly known as IDx-DR), it was our priority to show that the system was safe, effective, and equitable for use in patient care. We are thankful the AMA sees the value of supporting payment and coverage for AI health systems that meet rigorous validation. It is also incredibly important that AMA recommends autonomous AI developers assume accountability and liability for the system output, which we have been advocating for and practicing for years.”
