Increasing access to diabetic retinopathy exams with AI

Researchers from Johns Hopkins Medicine examined the impact of deploying AI in primary care and published a study that examined the change in diabetic eye disease (DED) showing improved access and enhanced health equity.

Improved Access

Johns Hopkins primary care sites using autonomous AI increased diabetic eye disease testing rates by 7.6 percentage points between 2019 and 2021 compared to sites with no autonomous AI.

Enhanced Health Equity

Significant improvements were seen in adherence rates within the categories of race, insurance coverage and Area Deprivation Index (ADI) quartile:

+12.2% in Black or African American Patients
+13.7% in Medicaid-Insured Patients
+11.7% in the 2nd ADI Quartile
